Project Synopsis
The Town of LeRay has something for just about everybody. The town’s proximity to both Watertown and a growing Fort Drum has spurred commercial and residential growth, particularly along Route 11, providing new settings in which to live and do business. At the same time, the town’s numerous villages and hamlets offer a glimpse into the past and opportunities for the future, anchoring the town with their historic and unique settings. Nor does one have to venture far from Route 11 or the town’s villages and hamlets to discover a scenic landscape of farms, woods and rustic country lanes. The Indian River and Black River are defining elements of this landscape, and enrich the town with a host of outdoor recreational opportunities. The town is also within a stone’s throw of two of New York State’s premier recreational destinations, the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands to the west and the Adirondacks to the east. And the town’s high quality soils continue to make it an attractive setting for farming, including new and innovative agricultural operations, such as organic dairies. All of these qualities, and more, combine to make the Town of LeRay a special place to visit and in which to live. The key goal of this project is to protect and build upon the special qualities of LeRay, while creating a plan to ensure that the town realizes the positive benefits of growth and change. Ultimately, it is about laying a foundation today for a town that all can be proud of tomorrow.
To this end, the Town of LeRay has embarked on a planning process that will culminate in the Town of LeRay Comprehensive Plan. A Comprehensive Plan Committee (CPC), consisting of a diverse array of community members and perspectives, has been formed to see the project through from beginning to end. Project partners include Behan Planning Associates, LLC, a planning consulting firm, and Erdman Anthony, an engineering firm with expertise in transportation planning.
The project is slated to conclude in the summer of 2008.
